Functions of a Clinical Supervisor
As a Registered Clinical Supervisor, I wear multiple "hats" in regards to the supervisor - resident relationship. My goal is to help you develop the skills necessary to conduct therapy, assist you in effectively managing your caseload, provide you with support and encouragement as well as role-model professionalism.
Teacher
Consultant
Coach
Mentor
Teacher - "Assist with the development of counseling knowledge and skills by identifying learning needs, determining counselor self-awareness, and transmitting knowledge for practical use and professional growth."
Consultant - "Provide case consultation and review, monitor performance, counsel the counselor regarding job performance, and assess counselors. The supervisor provides alternative case conceptualizations, oversight of counselor work to achieve mutually agreed-on goals, and professional gatekeeping for the organization and discipline (e.g., recognizing and addressing counselor impairment)."
Coach - "Provide morale building, assess strengths and needs, suggest varying clinical approaches, model, cheerlead, and prevent burnout. This function is critical for entry-level counselors."
Mentor - "Mentor and teach the supervisee through role modeling, facilitate the counselor’s overall professional development, and train the next generation of supervisors."

Clinical Supervision Style
I follow Bernard's Discrimination Model which was created by Janine Bernard in 1979. It is an Integrative Model of Supervision meaning that it emcompasses several techniques and theories. This model focuses on a combination of the 4 roles listed above, along with 3 loci:
Intervention
Conceptualization
Personalization
Bernard's model of supervision allows me to have up to 12 different ways to approach a case, in a unique way within supervision supervisor-supervisee relationship.
Intervention - The supervisee's observable skills in session and their level of counseling intervention delivered.
Conceptualization - How the supervisee interprets the themes and patterns showing up in session as well as the the intervention they choose to address the client's clinical distress.
Personalization - How supervisee integrates their personal style into their counseling style while simultaneously keeping personal issues and countertransference out of the session.
